Dhaka, Bangladesh Global: Bangladesh University Grants Commission Chairman (additional charge) Professor Muhammad Alamgir has recommended making internships mandatory for undergraduate degrees so that students can acquire the required employability skills according to the needs of various industries.

He made the recommendation while speaking as the chief guest at a training workshop at the UGC auditorium on Monday.

“In the age of artificial intelligence, there is no alternative for students to acquire employability skills. In the next 5 to 10 years, 50% of traditional jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence. Only high-efficiency work will require public involvement. Therefore, to meet the needs of the times, the current higher education curriculum should undergo major changes,” said the UGC chairman.

The UGC chairman said that many students are not getting employment opportunities after completing graduation as their institutions fail to make them skilled according to market demand.

“Many of the country’s industrial and commercial establishments employ foreign manpower, and they take a hefty amount of foreign exchange out of the country every year, which is by no means desirable,” he added.

UGC Secretary Ferdous Zaman chaired the training workshop, while Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre MDS (R&C) Md Monirul Islam attended it as a resource person.

A total of 55 officials of the commission participated in the workshop conducted by UGC Deputy Secretary Md Asaduzzaman.
