Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will jointly inaugurate three crucial development projects through a video conferencing ceremony on Wednesday (Nov 1).

These projects, completed with the support of India, aim to enhance regional connectivity and energy security.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for approximately 11 AM and will be conducted through a video conferencing.

The three projects to be inaugurated are the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.

The Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link project, which spans 12.24 kilometers, has been executed with a grant assistance of INR 392.52 crore provided by the Government of India to Bangladesh. It includes a 6.78-kilometer dual-gauge rail line in Bangladesh and a 5.46-kilometer section in Tripura.

The Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line Project, with a total project cost of USD 388.92 million, has been implemented through a concessional Line of Credit extended by the Government of India. This project involves the construction of approximately 65 kilometers of broad-gauge rail route, connecting Mongla Port, the second-largest port in Bangladesh, to the existing rail network in Khulna.

The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, financed through the Indian Concessional Financing Scheme with a loan of USD 1.6 billion, consists of a 1320 MW (2x660) Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) situated in Rampal, Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The project has been carried out by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Private) Limited (BIFPCL), a 50:50 Joint Venture company formed by India's NTPC Ltd and the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). While Unit I of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant was jointly inaugurated by both Prime Ministers in September 2022, Unit II is set to be inaugurated today (Nov 1).

The operationalisation of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant will significantly contribute to bolstering energy security in Bangladesh.

These projects hold the promise of strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing energy security in the region.
