Two drown, another missing while bathing in Padma

Munshiganj, Bangladesh Global: Two people drowned and another went missing while taking bath in the Padma River at Tongibari upazila in Munshiganj district on Friday evening. The divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered the bodies of two people, four hours after they had gone missing in the river at Dighipara area under the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Riyad Ahmed Raju, 45, and Md Jewel, 40, residents of Sallimullah Road in the capital’s Mohammadpur area. Meanwhile, Ramin Arid, 16, son of deceased Riyad, remained missing until filing the report.

Tongibari Fire Service in-charge Mostafa Kamal said that a team of divers arrived from Dhaka and recovered the bodies of Riyad and Jewel at around 8:30pm. According to the police and local people, the trio came to visit their relative Alam Molla's residence in the Besnal area of the upazila.

Later, at around 4:30pm on Friday, a group of 30-35 individuals set out on a trawler to explore the branch river of Padma in the Dhankora area. Some of them went to take a bath. Riyad and Jewel swept away by the river's current while trying to rescue Ramin, said local people.

Munshiganj Sadar Police Station’s Char Abdullah Neval out-post in-charge Abul Hasnat said that both the Fire Service and Neval police teams were conducting the rescue operation.
